What I Read: Book Releases April 2021

    Penumbra by Dan Ackerman

penumbra sci-fi book releases april 2021

    Genre: Sci-Fi Romance, LGBTQ
    Pubdate: 1st of April
    Publisher: Supposed Crimes

I’m a bit torn about my opinion of Penumbra, to be completely honest. It’s an interesting story and has many great elements, but it’s a lot. There were a lot of parts where I felt the story was dragging along.

The story’s about Arden, the Autarch (aka ruler) of Eden, a space station that’s floating over a dying planet. It’s a station with an oppressive class system, where the refugees had been given a debt they’re forced to pay off by working for so little wages they can never dream of getting rid of it. The rich are quite content with the system and aren’t keen on making concessions. However, Rhys, one of the workers, has earned Arden’s trust. Together, they’re on the verge of making some unpopular changes. It’s not just about disbanding an unfair, oppressive system. If nothing changes, Arden might not have a station to rule over if shortages continue.

I enjoyed the political themes in the story, as it’s not even that far-fetched: some countries still operate on a similar system. It’s pretty much modern slavery. The story progresses slowly, as Arden starts to realize how messed up the system actually is and that he does have the power to do something about it—even if that means that not everyone (the rich people) will be happy about it.

There’s also a large focus on Arden’s love-life, which I felt was more or less the reflection of how the relationship between the rich and the workers are going. Sometimes this made the story go too slow, and there were definitely parts where Arden was just going about his day that I felt were unnecessary.

However, the story’s themes are good and important, and I liked the fact that Arden is a transgender character and has same-sex relations, as we need more diversity in story protagonists. I can’t say I really liked Arden as a character, though as he becomes more aware of the issues, he also becomes more likable.

If you enjoy a thought-provoking space story with a diverse protagonist written by a non-binary author, then you should definitely give Penumbra a try.

Max and the Spice Thieves (Secrets of the Twilight Djinn #1) by John Peragine

fantasy book releases april 2021 max and the spice thieves

    Genre: Children’s Epic Fantasy
    Pubdate: 20th of April
    Publisher: Crumblebee Books

Obviously, I’m not the intended audience for this book, but I’ll give you my thoughts on it best as I can.

The story is about Max Daybreaker, whose mother suddenly goes missing. Lucky for him, a crew of Spice Pirates, led by Captain Cinn, offer to help Max with his quest, crossing the three seas. He gains even more unlikely allies: a teenage warrior queen, a three-eyed seer, and an assassin spy. They face treacherous lands with shape-shifting bears, an ancient witch, harpies, and the Djinn, who will stop at nothing to enslave the world. The further Max gets in his quest, the more secrets he learns about his past. Powers start to waken within him, forcing him to question everything he knows.

It’s an entertaining story, and I can imagine that children will enjoy it very much. However, when it comes to the actual writing, I’m less impressed. Especially the dialogue felt cringy at times. Next to that, a lot of times Max would think something, and then say it right after; I dislike that kind off repetition.

Other than that, a lot of the things that were going on, were explained in dialogue, creating long explanations that weren’t always that interesting.

I did like the idea of the story and the worldbuilding was done quite well. All in all I think kids will enjoy this story, as it is fun and easy to read. But don’t buy it if you get annoyed easily by more clunky writing.
